Closed Cell vs Open Cell Foam Explained

Atami EVA · 4 min read · January 2026

Why Does Cell Structure Matter?

A foam's cell structure directly determines its water permeability, sound insulation, thermal insulation and mechanical properties.

Closed Cell EVA Foam

Each cell is independent and sealed. This structure means water, air and moisture transmission is near zero. All Atami EVA products have closed-cell structure.

Open Cell Foam

Cells are interconnected, allowing water and air to pass freely. Advantageous for sound insulation but not suitable for wet environments or outdoor use.

Which for Industrial Applications?

For industrial applications like automotive, footwear, sports and packaging, closed-cell EVA foam should be preferred. Waterproofing and durability are the core requirements of these sectors.
